During his State of the Nation Address (SONA), The President of The Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that Sassa SRD R350 Grant will be extended for another 1 year.

Ramaphosa shared some of the stories of the SRD Grant beneficiaries showing the significance of the grant. He mentioned a story on R350 grant recipient who saved his R350 money for 7 months and started an ice cream store that now employs 4 people. Another one saved the R350 for 9 months to start a fast food store.

How helpful is R350 Grant?

For many South African, social grants goes a long way in putting food on the table. He said since the inception of the grant, the SRD grant has helped more than 10 million people in the country.

Oppositions and civil society organisations have been advocating for the universal basic income grant to replace this grant when it comes to an end.

More about the SRD R350 grant

The President declared a National State of Disaster as a result of the Covid-19 global pandemic. In this regard he introduced a special Covid 19 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) of R350 per month for 6 months to be paid to individuals who are currently unemployed, do not receive any form of income, social grant or UIF payment etc.

This Social Relief of Distress Programme was confirmed in the Regulations made under Section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002): Measures to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19, as amended.
